↓ Crisis of the real
Generated images have become everyday substrate of visual culture. Photographic comfort has been destabilized at scale. The issue is not that images can lie, but that “truth” is performed through provenance, platforms, metadata, institutional framing, and the viewer’s skepticism. AI art becomes less a style than a problem of visual modernity. If there is a direction forward, it’s historiography organized by a contested arena where the real is renegotiated.
Contemporary art's consequential moments arrive when artists turn the image into a problem rather than a solution. When form stops being an endpoint and becomes a way to think. We are saturated with many images that arrive resolved, competent, and optimized to please. In "AI art" the question is what kinds of belief, desire, memory, and authority images reorganize. What does it mean to make pictures when the real is no longer guaranteed by indexical capture, but negotiated through systems?
