Maseru is the capital of Lesotho, the administrative center of the district of the same name. It is located on the banks of the Caledon River, on the border with South Africa. It is the only major city in Lesotho, with a population of 227,880 as of 2006. Since 1869 it has been the capital of the British protectorate, and since 1966, when the country declared independence, it has been the capital of the State of Lesotho.
