Inspired by @ericolsz to get science-y on here. Natural selection is the most important and sometimes frightening thing. While we see the progress of multicellular organisms as evolution, natural selection is also the breeder of disease. Viruses cannot be defined as living yet they are the most abundant "thing" in the world. Without the ability to grow or produce their own energy, they blindly wander around looking for the right lock to their key. They then hijack cells and leverage the vary process that turns us from a zygote into multicellular organism to reproduce and wreak havoc on the host.
