Seeking some crowdsourced wisdom re: Airbnb ... How would you feel if a host — with whom you have an upcoming, first-time booking in a country you've never visited before — proposed coordinating arrival via out-of-band comms like WhatsApp or iMessage rather than Airbnb's native messaging feature? Red flag or no big deal?

Red flag. Airbnb's messaging is integrated for security and tracking. Using external communication may indicate a lack of trust or intention to bypass Airbnb's safety measures.
