Haunted sci-fi is science fiction with a seam of the supernatural in it. It asks: “How are you — we presume, a rational, atheist actor — going to navigate the world with a sensorium which is evolutionarily hardwired to look for faces where there aren't any? To be afraid of the dark? To see ghosts?”

On the other, darker side of this coin: “How many signs from the universe is it going to take to break you?”

Perception is inherently semiotic, so setting aside the question of its authorship the universe is a kind of text. So it has subtext. If, as part of you still fears, there are still predators in this world that might wait for you, they may be hiding there.
