Gumboro disease, also known as Infectious Bursal Disease (IBD), is a viral infection that significantly impacts broiler chickens, primarily affecting their immune system. The virus attacks immature B lymphocytes in the bursa of Fabricius, leading to immunosuppression and increased susceptibility to other diseases. This can result in reduced growth rates, increased mortality, and economic losses for poultry farmers.
Symptoms:
Depression: Affected birds may appear lethargic and inactive.
Ruffled Feathers: Birds may have an unkept appearance with ruffled feathers.
Diarrhea: Watery, mucoid diarrhea is a common symptom.
Reduced Feed and Water Consumption: Birds may eat and drink less than usual.
Mortality: In severe cases, particularly with very virulent strains, mortality rates can be high.
Swollen Bursa: The bursa of Fabricius, located in the cloacal region, may be swollen and inflamed.
