About 10 years ago, I published an essay about the life and times of Hermann von Helmholtz, the German polymath whose work predates much of modern neuroscience.
Helmholtz was the first to measure the speed of transmission of a nerve impulse and has a number of institutes named after him in Germany—he pioneered techniques in physics and optics as well.
If I felt like really flattering myself, I’d say I’ve spent the past decade or so learning to follow in the footsteps of Helmholtz. First, philosophy, especially Kant, then science to apply these complex logics to the physical world to better understand them.
Monkey see, monkey do, as my mom might have said. I’m proud of what I’ve seen. I hope this means that I will one day also be proud of the things I do during this period, in which I have the privilege of studying and perhaps also being studied.
Science is the great conversation of humanity. We teach each other, build things together, and hold ourselves to the highest standards in our research. We aim to find the truth. And life is good.
