df(physics) = The number of independent ways a system can move or change state. A bead on a wire has 1 degree of freedom (position along the wire). A ball in space has 6 (x, y, z position + rotation around each axis).
df(statistics) = The number of independent values that can vary in a dataset after you've imposed constraints. If you have 10 data points and you've calculated their mean, you have 9 degrees of freedom — because once you know 9 values and the mean, the 10th is determined.
df (engineering) = The number of independent parameters you can adjust. A system with more degrees of freedom is more flexible but harder to control.
anyone see where i'm headed next?
