begin by rejecting any model anyone pitches you on that involves simplicity.
if a simple model does happen to work, you can come back to it after you get a grip on the reasons this is true.
most of the time the simple explanations are wrong, though - our environment is not a scientific one and the stream of information we swim in is not pure.
rejecting overly simplistic views is step one in any journey of personal growth.
