One of the best experiences of my life ðŸ˜
Visiting a safari in Africa had always been one of my top bucket list items and we got to cross it off this past weekend in Maasai Mara, Kenya! Even though we didn’t get to witness migration (will have to come back for that), it was still such an incredible experience spending 6-8 hours a day driving through the vast lands and seeing these incredible beasts in the wild.
We saw 4 of the Big 5 - lions, elephants, buffalos, and leopards (a little rare). Sadly didn’t see any rhinos, but the last census from 2020 indicated there were only 50 on the Masai so not too surprised. When a leopard was spotted, the radios went wild and we saw many cars rush to the area. We were as many as 40-50 cars surrounding and chasing after two leopards. During Migration (peak June - August), there are 2-3x as many cars around each leopard spotting or lion killing spot.
Cost Breakdown:
$1500 per person (~RM6000) for 4D3N through an agency (we messaged many), which included: 5-star accommodations, 2 full day game drives with a guide in a private car, park entry fees ($200 or RM825 per PERSON per DAY - crazy high), all meals breakfast lunch and dinner, and car transportation between Nairobi and the safari (5-6 hours each way). Many people opt for flying instead which is ~$300 (RM1250) roundtrip and takes only 45 minutes, but they’re in the small planes which we were kind of scared to take.
Roundtrip flights from KL start at about $650 (~RM2600).
There are def more affordable options and far more luxe ones. I was happy with our package. Definitely recommend doing a private car - the shared cars looked packed. We had a 8-seater 4x4 to ourselves and I was often moving around to get the best views.
