Appreciate the thoughtful reply—but I actually think “extractive” is the wrong word here. Creators aren’t extracting value from a platform—we’re producing it. The issue is how to capture a fair share of that value without being exploited-not how to extract from others. Big difference.

I appreciate the thoughtful pushback. I totally agree that creators produce value, and that distinction matters. That said, I'm using "extractive" deliberately here, even though I know it usually carries a negative connotation. For me, it’s about extracting my fair share of the value I’m helping to generate, specifically from the platforms that monetize my presence: not from other users. I spent a long time not capturing any value at all because I associated "extractive" with exploitation. Reframing it as extracting the value of my contributions without exploiting people has been part of how I’ve found an approach I’m personally comfortable with. It’s a tricky line to walk, and I’m still figuring it out. But I think we’re both circling the same core problem: creators generate the value, but the systems to capture it fairly often feel broken or misaligned.
