Layer 1 blockchains like Ethereum, Solana, and Avalanche are continuously evolving to support increasingly complex decentralized applications (dApps). In the next few years, we’ll see these networks introduce advanced features like modular architectures, sharding, and enhanced smart contract functionalities to make them more scalable and adaptable for dApps that require complex logic, faster execution, and more efficient consensus mechanisms. For instance, Ethereum’s transition to Proof of Stake and sharding via EIP-4844 (Proto-Danksharding) will allow for more transactions per second, reducing bottlenecks. Moreover, Layer-2 solutions like Optimistic and zk-Rollups will offload transaction processing to improve scalability while maintaining the security of the base Layer 1. In the long run, Layer 1 blockchains will likely evolve into multi-chain ecosystems capable of supporting highly specialized dApps.
