Today is my 45th birthday and I am "celebrating" by going to a carnivorous plant garden and then having a nice dinner with my girlfriend. I compare that to my 27th birthday where throughout the night I hooked up with four different girls in the bathroom of a night club and it's just insane to see how our lives change. I figured for story time today we could take a look back at some of my more memorable birthdays...

Might as well start with my 21st birthday. I was straight edge growing up (and to this day I have never been a regular user of recreational substances) but I decided I should get drunk for the first time on my 21st birthday. I did 13 shots of Maker's Mark and somehow didn't pass out, puke or even have a hangover. I did however randomly cry because a girl my friend Benny liked left with another friend of mine, and for some reason that just made me so sad for him. I don't have any photos from that night but here is a photo of Benny and my high school ex.

From my 21st birthday on I made it a tradition to drink on my birthday as a special occasion and my 23rd birthday actually features the guy in the red shirt in the above picture (Dylan). I managed a band at the time and we had a residency at this bar so I knew they would let me drink for free there cause they always tried to give me drink tickets but I didn't drink. I got real drunk and didn't want to be at the bar anymore. Dylan's roommate was a competitive Dance Dance Revolution player and had this insane DDR set up in their livingroom and we decided we were gonna DDR drunk in the middle of the night so we made plans to go over there. On the way out of the bar Dylan smacked my ass just to get me to stop talking to people and leave, and for some reason I decided to jump kick him into the owner of the bar. I was just playing around but Dylan flipped out and started punching me. He is way smaller than me so I kinda just held him off until we got kicked out of the bar. We still ended up playing drunk DDR.

My 26th birthday was my last one before moving to NYC. My friend's had this incredible place in Richmond, VA where I went to college and we always had parties there. They had nothing in their huge living room so it could be a big dance floor and it was always a good time so I had my birthday there. But of course that was the night the cops showed up to shut it down. When I drink I am way too friendly so when the cops were kicking me out I put my arm around this lady cop to apologize and needless to say she freaked the fuck out. Luckily she didn't arrest me and I brought the entire party to my apartment, but I didn't want anyone inside my apartment so I just put a literal mix CD in my car and we partied in the street for hours. No idea how the cops didn't show up again.

As I alluded to previously my 27th birthday was maybe the most insane night. When I moved to NYC my website had become party photo blog and it quickly blew up. Everyone wanted to be at the parties I was photographing so when I threw a party they were always great. On my blog I posted about how my birthday wish was to make out with at least 10 women for my birthday and litteral strangers showed up to make out with me. I made out with over 20 people and hooked up with four people in the bathrooms, only one of whom I had met before. Weirdly enough actually ended up dating one of those girls. What an insane time.

For my 30th birthday I declared it would be my last birthday party until I turned 40. I was done with celebrating getting closer to death. I also posted that my goal this year was to make out with 30 people for my 30th. When I got into the 20s my roommate became invested because she told me she would only make out with me if I couldn't hit 30. She was walking up to random strangers who weren't even at the club for my party to explain the situation. At the end of the night she sucked it up and became woman #30 to make out with me 😂. As I was waiting to get paid for "hosting" the party I sat down next to one of the gogo dancers that worked the party and said "I just rescued two kittens and I have a big dick, do you want to come home with me?" She responded "I want proof." I showed her photos of both and she said "If anyone asks, I went home with you for the cats." We are still friends to this day and no she is not in this picture.

Fast forward a decade and the plan is to celebrate my 40th birthday by going on a family trip to Hawaii, unfortunately the pandemic happened. In May 2020 shit was still insane in NYC, we had spent the last two months listening to constant sirens and reading about bodies being buried in mass graves in Central Park. I had a lot of elderly neighbors who I didn't want to risk so I spent my 40th birthday alone on my couch. That night the first serious George Floyd protests happened in NYC and the next day I hit the streets and watched the police beat the shit out of peaceful protesters for absolutely no reason. My photos/video ended up on TV, in the NY Times and used in a court case against the NYPD.
