They kinda can, just v expensive. There are some super super soft filaments that would work like erasers, and there are methods sintering that can get into materials that aren't otherwise printable (ie extrudable). There are powder metal printers for ex Closest thing today for cheap would probably be an injection molded plasticized foam But idk I'm just spitballing
