ex-silicon valley product monk turned rural-japan ascetic craig mod pens a walking memoir as a long letter to his closest friend. mod (normally the tour guide) makes himself the exhibit, and grief bleeds into every page. the book makes it painfully clear that for mod, walking is the only coping mechanism that allows him to continue seeing beauty in the world. lean, vivid, quietly profound.
