tl;dr - It's a real divide and seems to have gotten worse since ~2012. Likely some of it is genetic, including predisposition to mental health issues. Conservativism (and religion) probably help people respond to adversity and continue to be happy. Many liberal ideologies likely exacerbate anxiety. The increase in these ideologies may explain changes since 2012.
