i'm starting to sketch out the rough direction for /campfire's text-only (to start) social protocol (a completely independent alternative to the Farcaster protocol, if successful). buckle in...this is gonna be a long boiiiiiiiiiiii 🫴πŸͺ΅πŸ”₯ i'll start with my motivations and accompanying reasoning. πŸ‘‡

/campfire is intended to be a music-sharing app/platform, with the goal of "making music social again". you literally can't send a song to a friend on Spotify! wtf? there are no feeds, and the only social feature, besides real-time co-listening (very fkn cool, actually) and sharing playlists (also dope) (cont'd πŸ‘‡)

..is this creepy ass what-are-my-friends listening to rn bullshit, and you have to turn if off every session which is stupid (and rude) af (plz let me cry to swifty alone at 3am in peace, ok?) i built a proof of concept of the app for iOS back in 2023 (in SwiftUI...which i came to really, really love, fwiw)

but the app, as built, is super limited (see below). we validated the concept with a small group (~couple dozen DJs+producers+music sickos, like myself) and now need to build an alpha that can support 100s (or more) users, and we need a Real Backendβ„’ for that..

(the existing one just uses CloudKit [see below], which is p dope for what it is, but not the right fit whatsoever for what we're doing. it was just the literally fastest/easiest way to test the POC..) so, we have some options for backend/hosting: https://developer.apple.com/icloud/cloudkit/

1) centralized, hosted AWS or Google Cloud shit or similar (yuck, i do not want to rely on publicly-traded businesses and risk vendor lock-in, and they tend not to be cost-effective, and love to raise their pricing adversarially, so we are giving away unknown marginβ€”potentially in perpetuityβ€”for ~free, or worse)

2) standard bespoke + centralized (web2 type beat) backend (still might end up there if this whole social protocol experiment fails, more than a little likely, but then i'm building a bunch of primitives i could borrow from another social framework, protocol, or standard...alas)

3) or something open(~ish) that provides some crucial social primitives out of the box, such as, of course, Farcaster itself...

i tried to bring myself to build the /campfire app as a Farcaster client, but Merkle Manufactury (MM), the creators of Farcasterβ€”so far to me at leastβ€”appear to lack the standards and values required of /campfire (and myself). we are punk; MM is clearly not.

they're attempting to serve a different target market; we want the geeks, they want the mops. their financial incentive is to grow DAU asap, so they are directly encouraging scummy, bottom-of-the-barrel, engagement-maxxing content. i understand why, but i don't like it. https://meaningness.com/geeks-mops-sociopaths

lately, i've been here for the community, and the fading hope that maybe the paper tiger that is "sufficient decentralization" might become a little less bullshit. MM still won't even say what the protocol fees are for (lol @geoffgolberg), and i'm done waiting on them. the answer so far has p much been "trust me, bro"

we *shouldn't* trust them because we shouldn't have to trust anything but code, cryptography, and computer networks for this to all work. very hard, but not impossible (i deeply hope, anyways, and will work with all my might towards achieving this)
