does speed reading *actually* work? I’ve tried it in earnest a handful of times and either my cpu isn’t powerful enough or I’m doing it wrong. seems ripe for psyop with its claim to superhuman benefit and ability to always say “you just need to practice more” etc. but, is it real?

for me, i can skim through stuff that i already know or that’s low information density very quickly. but i still need to chew on the new/useful stuff so it’s kind of a “hunt” mode then “digest” mode

Based on my experience this is the right way to approach it. Information provided in written form is not distributed equally. Passages with low information density can be "speed read". Once you fast forwarded to the meat on the bone you can slow down and take your time to understand what's in front of you.
