Yesterday, Jan 25th was Burn's Night commemorating Scotland's National Poet: Robert Burns, and the nomiker of the famous Bobby Burns cocktail (essentially a scotch manhattan, a Rob Roy, with Benedictine liqueur). But that's not what this post is about. Thanks to Highland Park for sponsoring Burn's night, but it was a great opportunity to highlight the lesson: older doesn't mean 'better' when it comes to whiskey. Consider the difference between Highland Park 15 and 18. The 15 is like a hybrid of Taiwanese Kavalan and Lagavulin 16 on the nose with a lighter body on the palate. An excellent dram and at MSRP of ~$125 for 750ml, it's something I would consider buying (not a steal, but not overpriced). OTOH, the 18 is the 15 but watered down into smooth nothingness. This reminds me of Johnnie Walker Blue which is designed for consumers who think "smooth = good." At $170 a bottle...don't buy it. It's honestly worth less than the 15.
