Singing the notes you play while you improvise/solo is great way to get better at both singing but also make you more comfortable improvising 

I am playing relatively fast in this clip but even if you are new to improvising this is a great way to get more comfortable  with the fretboard. It will increase your confidence and pitch recognition.  Related but improv is all about knowing what chords in the song are going to be played and playing notes around the changes.

Even if you just play scales or arpeggios you will notice this will help a lot.

This is a really cool technique, currently doing a summer course in Indian classical music and a big part of playing. It is being able to sing everything which 15 years of playing guitar hadn't taught me haha
