There were lots of things not obvious. 

Hashtags were invented by users, as another example.

We used to have "tweetups" (IRL meetings of early Twitter users aka "tweeple").

It was a wild time. LOL.

i find all this interesting, twitter is the first social media platform i ever joined and even though i can't stand it atm, i've enjoyed reading stories about its early days this week.
