Ethereum contract devs: if we could 10x the gas limit but, to do so, we had to 10x the gas cost of CREATE, CREATE2 and SSTORE, would that still be a net improvement? Why or why not? IOW, if state growth is our main bottleneck to scale L1 gas, should we just fix it with pricing?

Kind of defeats the purpose to increase costs in tandem with the limit, no? I thought the longer-term idea was some form of state-expiry/pruning?

Maybe the thought here is to encourage more efficient state consumption by devs with the benefit of transaction throughput increasing? And then presumably pruning would drop prices again. Market force on devs for induced demand on usage or something like that?

More like compute is an untapped resource, and storage is an overused one, so make everything but storage cheaper and "dedicate" more block space for it.

Yeah, makes sense - if state expiry is realistically several years away I can see why there needs to be some rebalancing if L1 gas cost is to be increased by 10-100x before then (which I think it should!).
