A Social Filesystem is a really cool model the main question that kept popping up in my head was and then what? how useful is this data outside the context, i.e. the app and time, it is was created it? how am I going to interact with this data in the future? I don't care about my Facebook reply to some one I went to high school with 20+ years ago, I actually would rather this data expire. broadly I think I'd rather live in a world where all data to expire that I don't explicitly time capsule vs the opposite. otherwise it feels something like digital hoarding where you cling to information that has decayed into irrelevance adding some small drag on who you are I don't care about a throw away post I made a couple days on Farcaster that was hyper specific to a certain meta on the timeline in the circles I care about, it's not useful as a standalone piece of content. if it was useful as a standalone piece of content I'd explicitly place it in an app where that makes sense and is free from shit posts, e.g. Substack, a personal site I'm skeptical that this history is particularly useful for apps other than to surveil me in ways I don't want. for instance if I'm an early user on a new social network, I want the status of a 3 letter handle rather than bringing my late to the game ENS handle (if everyone used a global name service in a 100 years everyone would be like "find me at tony97831" because billions of dead people we're hodling the shorter ones), nor do I want to follow my high school social graph, nor do I want to republish the same pieces of content, etc. data outside the context of the app feels marginally to negatively useful. a terrible analogy but think DNA outside a cell. given the volume of someones social data it's unlikely it can easily be consumed outside of an app... like maybe you grep for keywords once in a while? the most useful way I could see this data being used is to build a PERSONAL PANOPTICON a la Molly Cantillon... an AI that has more context on you than you have on yourself, that reads your entire social history to form a model of you and then does something hopefully useful for you in return. whether or not you do do this you can almost be certain that someone trying to sell you something will do it for you https://x.com/mollycantillon/status/2008918474006122936?s=20 https://overreacted.io/a-social-filesystem/
