Khmelnytskyi was originally called *Proskuriv* until 1954, when it was renamed in honor of the Ukrainian Cossack leader Bohdan Khmelnytskyi, who led a major uprising against Polish rule in the 17th century. Today, the city is a key transportation hub, often called the 'Gateway to Western Ukraine
