IMO airdrops if done a certain way e.g. guiding users to an action are pretty close to standard user activation methods

I think if the airdrops are used to power the app it could be a cool way to get your first 1,000 users. But it definitely feels like a whole new ball game.

its the exit promoting nature of tokens that are the problem - airdropping credits etc. works in web2 and should work in web3 as well

But there are a few parallels in my mind to web2 โ€œairdropsโ€ or airdrop-like mechanics: - PayPal, Coinbase, Robinhood, etc. free $$$ on signup or referral - Dropbox free storage/$$ on referrals - Grubhub subsidies: selling $10 burgers for $8 - Zyngaโ€™s gamified rewards, daily bonuses, & referrals

Airdrop is a feature of web3 although not always necessary, traditional web2 doesnโ€™t want to pay the average user, most airdrops reward users who have been loyal
