I haven't followed it closely, but there was some outcry by ID people concerned that the ISO/IEC 18013-5 standard (mDLs) "phones home" during the verification process, so every time your ID is digitally verified it is recorded with the gov.

I unironically believe theyâre better trusted with that info than government DBs. Not to say that an Apple Wallet integration should be the endgame, not at all, but itâd be a step forward imo.
