Finally got around to booting up my new Mac Mini.

First thing I did was figure out how to install Nix, nix-darwin and pkgs.code-cursor from nixpkgs.

Now I have my Nix Flake file opened up in Cursor and I’m asking Claude how to set up all the apps and build tools and IDEs I need so I never have to manually download anything ever again.

I had a few months where I used Nix as my package manager, but eventually I just ran into so many weird bugs and issues that I decided to go back to Homebrew. Was likely a skill issue and will probably find my way back over there one day 🥲 Feel like Nix mastery is like the Linux final boss, way more than Arch

Rise LLMs may finally make me wanna try nix. I was always overwhelmed by its fragmented and extensive docs

Ideally. So far I’m finding that not all the apps I want to use actually have a working nixpkgs configuration so I have to fall back to the homebrew manager built into nix-darwin.

Would be great if you could keep us updated! I've been thinking about trying this out but not sure if it's worth the steep learning curve. Maybe cursor will help

So you know how when you set up a new computer, you have to hunt for all the apps and software you want by clicking dozens of buttons in the App Store, downloading things from a bajillion websites, and tweaking all the settings?

A bunch of smart cookies created software like Homebrew and Nix to help automate all of those steps in a consistent and replicable way. Developers and system admins absolutely love it and I absolutely see why.

I started using lix about a month ago and I haven't noticed much of a difference. It is basically a drop in replacement.

Side note, the `nixCpp` release since 2.18 have just been plagued with breaking features for me. Is the newest nix 2.24.2 more stable?
