spoke with a vinyl record store owner in their shop in manhattan for a full hour today. Was trying to get at why he hesitates to sell online. he knows he can't compete on price in deeply liquid environments - and the buyers there are more demanding and unpredictable anyway. He felt the only way for his inventory to have its value expressed properly was to have it in a difficult-to-access environment. anything that reinforced that access to his product essentially *was* the product. The value of the product wasn't that it was that one specific record - you can find that album anywhere if you look for it. it was the fact that the album was there, specifically in that context, specifically in the narrative he created for it.
