exactly! on big platforms you’re both trying to have a conversation and at the same time avoid the possibly hundreds of people looking for a fight. there’s a lot of disingenuous talk, plus the possible social points you could win from being right are too tempting to let up.

and in the case of X there’s an already existing precedent that it’s okay to be ‘rude and abrasive’ so people often lean into their worse natures and go that route. i have since learned to keep sensitive conversations to irl settings because there’s too much nuance that people online neither have the patience, empathy or even common sense to consider.

there are exceptions (farcaster for now, reddit to an extent) but i think the reason is because small networks of early adopters approach conversations with more of an open mind and when there isn't much potential for virality there's less incentive to dunk or intentionally talk past eachother for likes

the combination of character limits and the dopamine hits that come with getting likes don't foster thoughtful engagement at all. as a matter of fact it amplifies all the worst parts of disingenuous interactions
