“What’s it like to work for the boss?” One of my all-time favorite questions. I ask it in 360s, interviews, even casual coffees. It consistently delivers more insight than anything else I ask. People say—and don’t say—all sorts of invaluable things. Years ago, I asked a leader this question. They paused, then said: “Very demanding. Incredibly rewarding. I think [NAME] is the highest-paid person in this industry… and I think they deserve way more.” Let that sit for a second. Now consider: What would people say if someone asked this about you?

The answer to that question tells you more about leadership than any resume ever could. Respect isn't earned by title. It's built day by day in how you lead.
