Most leaders are better at starting a conversation than finishing one.
Think about the last time you left a 1:1 and thought: Wait… what exactly are my next steps?!
Next time, try ending with these two questions:
1️⃣ How was this conversation for you?
2️⃣ What are our clear next steps?
If you’ve never done this, it might feel awkward. But here’s what I’ve learned from 1,000+ hours of coaching:
— Don’t assume you know how the conversation landed. That first question invites reflection—which is where real learning happens.
— It’s hard to over-clarify next steps. “Let’s sync next week” isn’t enough. Bonus points if next steps include letting go of something.
