Welcome! 538 is one of the few news sources where I trust data viz. 

I too often believe that data viz is misleading (weird y-axis, cherry picking data sources to make a point, etc).

I’m curious how you see things on an industry level regarding this. Am I overreacting or is it as pervasive an issue as I think it is?

When done right, it’s the best! But I just think there are too many bad actors out there using it to push a specific agenda: “look, it’s in a graph so it must be true!” and the source data *is* true but it’s also nonsense

I do think you have to stay on your toes, but ultimately I think data visualization is a way to show a story is based on true-to-life ground truth and that a measure of effort was put into it. Shows it took legwork, not gossip.
