It took me a long time to see myself as an artist. Certainly in my context it seemed quite an arrogant thing to say, and not something I could inhabit. I was in my mid 20s with enough theatre under my belt, and making graphic work and some writing, but fundamentally I became aware that I was seeing and responding the world as an artist. Since then my sense of identity and what I’m spending my time on has fluctuated, sometimes with art (in the broad definition) at the fore and sometimes in the background.
I had an interesting conversation with a friend about this the other day, and ended up concluding that the approach might be just to say ‘I make art’
