Great to recapture the energy of Farcon last night. Here are the notes from On the Sopha yesterday. 𝗙𝗔𝗥𝗖𝗢𝗡 𝗥𝗘𝗙𝗟𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦 Farcon in Rome was a deeply resonant event, characterized by an intimate scale and a palpable sense of community energy. The standout feature was the quality of interpersonal connections, with many noting that the event felt like a gathering of old friends rather than a typical conference. • 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁: A powerful moment occurred during a presentation where a speaker struggled on stage. Instead of discomfort, the room responded with empathy and active support, with attendees asking questions to help the speaker share their insights. This showcased the supportive, pro-social nature of the Farcaster community. • 𝗦𝗻𝗮𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝘀 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗸: A "Snapathon" event was highlighted as a burst of creative energy, where people who had never built before collaborated spontaneously. This embodied the builder culture present at Farcon. • 𝗦𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗰𝘆: The venue and size were praised as "perfect" - large enough to feel like a happening, yet small enough to talk to everyone. This intimacy allowed for deep conversations and a feeling of a "backyard patio with friends," a contrast to larger, more overwhelming events like Farcon New York. • 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗔𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀: While there were no groundbreaking protocol announcements, the cumulative conversations and presentations (notably from Rish on the Neynar team) hinted at a strategic direction: a focus on 𝗽𝗿𝗼-𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗻𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀 (helping people be their best selves) and a renewed emphasis on artists and creators using blockchain for practical distribution, not just speculation. 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗖𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗧𝗢𝗥 𝗘𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗢𝗠𝗬 𝗢𝗡 𝗙𝗔𝗥𝗖𝗔𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗥: 𝗔𝗥𝗧𝗜𝗦𝗧 𝗘𝗖𝗢𝗦𝗬𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗠 The event highlighted a growing practical use of blockchain for artists, moving beyond PFPs and speculation. This was exemplified by the presence of the Kismet Casa artists. • 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗕𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝗯𝘆 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘀: The Kismet Casa artists demonstrated a pragmatic approach to NFTs: using wallets and tokens as a direct, global payment rail without the need for intermediaries. This resonated as a simple yet powerful example of "wallet-to-wallet" commerce. • 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗕𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲: Some attendees felt that the musical performances at Farcon, while valuable, were too frequent and competed with socializing. This sparked a reflection on the tension between creating space for artists and ensuring the event remains conducive to networking - a paradox many acknowledged as part of a healthy, community-driven event. 𝗔𝗜 𝗔𝗚𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗦, 𝗜𝗗𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗜𝗧𝗬, 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗙𝗨𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗘 𝗢𝗙 𝗙𝗔𝗥𝗖𝗔𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗥 The conversation explored how AI agents are shaping social networks and the need for clear identity labeling. This was linked to Neynar’s thinking on protocol-level features. • 𝗟𝗮𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝘃𝘀. 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘀: A key debate centered on whether to assume users are human by default and label agents, or vice versa. The emerging consensus was to 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗲 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗮𝘂𝗹𝘁 and mark AI agents explicitly, to preserve trust and avoid deception (e.g., being duped by a bot). • 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁-𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵: Neynar indicated that identity labeling would first be tested at the client level (like in their app) before considering protocol-level integration. This allows for rapid iteration and demand validation. • 𝗢𝗻𝗯𝗼𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗘𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴: There was interest in using AI as a concierge to help new users navigate Farcaster's channels and find their community - a feature many felt was missing. The idea that culture might become encoded into AI through the language and behavior of the community was raised, potentially leading to more pro-social AIs in the ecosystem. • 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀: The Japanese community was noted as a significant group that largely left Farcaster, possibly due to lack of native-language support. Discussions about integrating translation features (like a "translate" button vs. automatic translation) highlighted the need to balance cost with inclusivity, especially for Spanish and other large language groups. 𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗠𝗨𝗡𝗜𝗧𝗬 𝗗𝗬𝗡𝗔𝗠𝗜𝗖𝗦 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗧𝗛𝗘 "𝗛𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗘𝗥" 𝗠𝗘𝗠𝗘 A separate, more informal thread explored the culture around the 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗲𝗿 meme and its community. This served as a case study in how memetic communities form, gatekeep, and evolve. • 𝗚𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘃𝘀. 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: One participant shared a story of trying to engage with the Higher manifesto creators but receiving no response, which dampened their enthusiasm. In contrast, the example of @catra.eth (an individual who simply started doing things within the Higher ecosystem) was praised for demonstrating a more open, meritocratic approach. • 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗽𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴: The discussion contrasted cabal-like structures (where a few control the direction) with more organic, bottom-up movements. The Higher community was seen as having both elements, but the successful builders were those who just "went with it." • 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱: The aesthetic and philosophy of Higher (headless figures, abstract photography) were appreciated by some but not all. This reinforced the idea that even within a niche community, there are multiple sub-communities with different tastes and motivations. 𝗙𝗢𝗨𝗡𝗗𝗘𝗥 𝗖𝗛𝗘𝗖𝗞 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗔𝗥𝗧 𝗢𝗙 𝗚𝗢-𝗧𝗢-𝗠𝗔𝗥𝗞𝗘𝗧 𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗘𝗚𝗬 The discussion moved onto 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸 from @jonathancolton , a web app that helps founders validate their product ideas by defining their target audience and the problem they solve. The app has been "liberated" from being a Farcaster mini-app to a standalone web application. • 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮-𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: The app is powered by a unique corpus of data gathered from Reddit, Product Hunt, and Farcaster, analyzing common founder pains around go-to-market (GTM) failure. This data validated that the number one struggle for founders is identifying 𝘄𝗵𝗼 they are building for. • 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀: Founder Check uses a structured, four-pillar framework (who, what, where, monetization) to help founders achieve clarity. It integrates a "reasoning agent" powered by Claude to allow users to discuss their results and iterate. • 𝗖𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗺: The transition from a Farcaster-native tool to a general web app represents a critical test - moving from a trusted, curated community to the "wild" of Reddit and Product Hunt, where social trust is absent. This will determine if the tool's value proposition resonates outside the crypto bubble.
