Yesterdays community call notes 𝗦𝗨𝗠𝗠𝗔𝗥𝗬 The meeting served as a weekly community discussion focused on exploring the purpose, value proposition, and future direction of Sopha, a Farcaster client built for meaningful, long-form conversation. A central theme was interrogating the core functionality of "collections" - curated sets of casts - and how they fit into the broader mission of creating a space for curious people. 𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗥𝗢𝗗𝗨𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗦𝗛𝗔𝗥𝗘𝗗 𝗠𝗢𝗧𝗜𝗩𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 Participants introduced themselves, revealing a common draw to Sopha as a refuge for quality conversation and a potential solution to felt gaps in the broader Farcaster experience. • 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻-𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲: Multiple participants expressed frustration with the "flattening" effect of mass social media and the deprioritization of features like channels on Farcaster. Sopha is seen as an experiment to recreate a digital "cozy corner" for thoughtful, open individuals. • 𝗥𝗲-𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: Several were drawn to Sopha after becoming disengaged with Farcaster, particularly following its shift towards a more trading-centric culture. They see Sopha as a way to reconnect with the platform's original potential for learning and connection. • 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: A key motivator is the challenge of discovering high-quality content and the lack of a way to preserve valuable series or conversations on Farcaster, which often "evaporate" over time. 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗖𝗢𝗥𝗘 𝗗𝗘𝗕𝗔𝗧𝗘: 𝗩𝗔𝗟𝗨𝗘 𝗢𝗙 𝗖𝗢𝗟𝗟𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦 𝗩𝗦. 𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗠𝗨𝗡𝗜𝗧𝗬 A significant portion of the conversation wrestled with a foundational question: where does the primary value of Sopha lie - in the curated collections of content, or in the community of people doing the curating? • 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝘀 "𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝗳 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸": One perspective posited that a collection is the tangible outcome or "proof of work" of a community's shared taste and collaborative curation. It's the artifact created by valuable human judgment. • 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲: It was argued that a collection without a curator's coherent plan or story is less valuable. The trust and taste of the individual or group behind the collection give it meaning, similar to a museum exhibit. • 𝗨𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀: Collections were presented as a dual-purpose tool: for creators, they offer a permanent home for their body of work; for consumers and community members, they provide a trusted, structured entry point to catch up on topics or discover new thinkers. 𝗢𝗡𝗕𝗢𝗔𝗥𝗗𝗜𝗡𝗚, 𝗗𝗜𝗦𝗖𝗢𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗬, 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗧𝗛𝗘 "𝗖𝗨𝗥𝗜𝗢𝗦𝗜𝗧𝗬" 𝗚𝗔𝗣 The discussion naturally expanded to the broader challenges of onboarding new users to Farcaster and Sopha, identifying a "curiosity gap" that needs to be bridged. • 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲: Newcomers often feel lost, posting "into the void" without engagement, and are confronted with insider jargon and a feed dominated by crypto-native topics. The social layer is hard to crack without existing connections. • 𝗠𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: A compelling vision emerged for Sopha as a place that not only surfaces good content but cultivates curiosity and enables action. This could mean curating collections that help users understand and participate in new Farcaster projects (like /brackey or /better), effectively serving as an onboarding and educational hub. • 𝗧𝗵𝗲 "𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗚𝘂𝘆" 𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲: A novel insight was the suggestion to surface high-quality replies and conversations. Since much connection and wit exists in comment threads, featuring these could be a unique hook for discovery and highlight a different type of valuable contributor. 𝗗𝗘𝗙𝗜𝗡𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗦𝗢𝗣𝗛𝗔'𝗦 𝗣𝗨𝗥𝗣𝗢𝗦𝗘 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗘𝗚𝗜𝗖 𝗙𝗢𝗖𝗨𝗦 The group grappled with articulating a focused value proposition for Sopha, debating whether to cast a wide net or serve a specific niche exceptionally well. • 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗮𝗽: A concern was raised that if too many people curate collections, the selections might become homogenous, simply re-surfacing the same popular casts rather than enabling true discovery of hidden gems. • 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴, 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻: The argument was made for Sopha to have a bold, specific editorial stance (e.g., "the place to learn how to actually use Farcaster") rather than trying to be everything to everyone. This focus could attract a dedicated audience. • 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗸: Despite the emphasis on community, data from user surveys and testimonials during the call indicated that the primary draw for users is still 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘵 - the ability to find and read meaningful long-form writing that gets lost in other feeds. 𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗠𝗨𝗡𝗜𝗧𝗬 𝗔𝗦 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗙𝗢𝗨𝗡𝗗𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗣𝗔𝗧𝗛 𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗪𝗔𝗥𝗗 The conversation concluded by reflecting on the group itself as a model and the strategic next steps for Sopha. • 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝘀 𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵: The weekly discussions were acknowledged as valuable "customer discovery," providing diverse perspectives that help shape the product. The growing attendance was seen as validation of the community's appeal. • 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴: The idea of being more deliberate about building the Sopha community was proposed. This could involve setting a shared topic for deeper interrogation or even collaborating on community-driven projects. • 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: There was a consensus that it is time to synthesize the explorations of recent weeks into a clear, coherent narrative or "presentation" of what Sopha is and aims to be, to provide direction while remaining open to evolution. • 𝗔 𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 "𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹": Underlying the discussion was a sense that Farcaster (and by extension, Sopha) may be best suited for "prosumer social" - a network of innovators, builders, and curious tinkerers rather than the mainstream, which requires embracing a smaller but more engaged market.
