3. how would answer to 1) change if status on 2) was different?

Just buy a 7 seater and fold the last 2 seats down. 

Gives you the room you need in most cases.

Also gives you the extra seats when needed.

The key is to get 3 seats in the middle row so that 1 of the parents can stay with the kids.

If you have pilot seats in the 2nd row and you have small kids, you are screwed!!
