Ohio is bisected by the St. Lawrence Continental Divide, which directs water in the northern part of the state towards the Atlantic Ocean via Lake Erie and the St. Lawrence River. South of this divide, water flows into the Ohio River, eventually joining the Mississippi River and reaching the Gulf of Mexico.
