** warning shilling a blog post I wrote ** At the end of last year I realized I didn’t know much about the cypherpunks, just that they pushed for privacy. Then I learned about their fearless fight for freedom and was inspired If you want to learn more about them I wrote a blog on their history, innovations, and how their ethos lives on in Ethereum If you're lazy... TLDR In the 90s, it started with cypherpunks rallying behind privacy software like PGP, including getting crypto algos tattooed on them to show it's just speech, and ended with a court ruling that code is free speech under the First Amendment. This set a legal precedent, giving us a freer world with private communication “Cypherpunks write code. We know that someone has to write software to defend privacy, and since we can't get privacy unless we all do, we're going to write it.” - Eric Hughes, A Cypherpunk’s Manifesto https://paragraph.com/@chaskin/who-even-were-the-cypherpunks
