I've realized this only recently but the choice of launching LLMs in this chat format has been horrible for society.
It cultivated this belief that it's "more than a tool" when ultimately they're supposed to be for completing tasks or finding text online.
The way we talk to LLMs with "you and I" is somewhat normalized at this point and obviously I've been doing this for years as well. I only realized its reality-distorting and counter-evolutionary effects on me after I tried to have a deeply personal conversation, which made me feel like shit. Discussing the same thing with a friend had the exact opposite feeling. This should be obvious but I'm afraid we're losing this very obvious intuition as we normalize our relationship with the chat interface.
