I wish there was a way to explain how it feels to be a middle eastern immigrant in the west.
There's a lot to dislike in the middle east. Tribal nonsense, gender dynamics, over-intervention from society etc.
We wanted to leave, but it's incredibly hard to secure a job, visa, life in Europe/USA. The amount of effort required to move takes/took everything to get there. We still did it, because we thought West was built on non-tribal ideals.
This turned out to be completely false. You may call us naive (considering colonial history), but everyone thought that way.
Now most immigrants I know feel emotionally and intellectually homeless. We don't fit in Middle East but the place for which we spent all our youth to build a new life feels just... Soulless evil. Learning your friends, your kids' school teachers, your customers believing that your life ≠ another European/American life is a wild feeling.
