anyone recall the story behind Schnorr signatures not being widely adopted? was it because of patents?

IMO if the Zama patents are allowed to stand, then FHE is effectively removed from the hands of OS devs. Sure research could continue in "non-commercial spaces" but like what's the motivation for a researcher to dedicate their life's work to this.
