I think "plenty" is doing a lot of lifting in this sentence. There's a few uncomfortable truths that get ignored when we talk about VA stuff. First and foremost, VA disability is not welfare and it's not social security. It's an earned benefit. People hear about disability payments and freak out bc they're not getting $700 a month "for free", but those people conveniently forget they had (and likely still have) the ability to sign on the dotted line and go to basic training for the "privilege" of getting injured enough in some way which results in a VA disability payment.
