i get that and definitely feel it was overused (my notes app, for example, doesn't need a leather menu bar and ripped page effect)

…but i think in some contexts it helped create a sense of place!

Definitely serves a purpose in some contexts, especially for things people aren’t used to digitizing. This will surely decrease over time but we’ll still be left with vestiges of the analog world - desktops and recycling bins for example.
