Most “decentralized” folk are the epitome of centralization when it comes to film or music—but they were already telling you that, you just were not paying attention. Stated vs revealed isn’t just preference; it’s a map of systems of extraction.
Do you chase the indie festival hidden gem, or rely on curated canon lists? Do you watch for immediate payoff, social signaling, and memeable hooks—or mine for subtext, structure, and formal patterns you can apply elsewhere?
Surface-level categories—indie vs. blockbuster, horror vs. rom-com—tell you almost nothing. What reveals a person is how they extract value, and from what kind of system: centralized, decentralized, high-leverage, high-modernist, fast-consumption, slow-synthesis.
In other words, what movies tell you isn’t what you like—they tell you how your mind likes. Consumption patterns are cognitive fingerprints. The what is noise; the how is signal.
