15 years ago, I'd see a satellite or two nightly, but I lived so far far away from city lights. Today, I see at least two nightly and I'm in the suburbs. Are they closer and more frequent?

Way more frequent. Our space images of earth are altered to remove many because it’s actually nasty junky looking, we look like we are covered in fleas 

and they breakdown and introduce metals into the ionosphere making it turbo electrical charged, more so then we’ve ever had on record
