The US and Mexico are close to a deal to scrap Trump's 50% steel tariffs below a set limit. Led by Commerce Secretary Ruttnick, talks exclude Trump himself. Under the new terms, US buyers can import Mexican steel duty-free if shipments stay below a historical trade cap. This cap is higher than the 2019 deal during Trump's first term. Last year, Mexico supplied 3.2 million tons, 12% of US steel imports. The 2019 agreement capped imports at 2015-2017 average levels.
