Things like network states, will increase but not really be powerful enough to entirely control legacy countries or break up bigger international governmental entities, but will eventually have to have treaties with them. Some in the far left will respond with creating similar communes that run on those philosophies. The United States will probably be more like Europe, and individual states will be more like countries with networked states, communes and tribal communities in them negotiating treaties within those and with international bodies as well. It's going to be a rough time ahead, but reading the archeological record might give needed perspective of how populations ebb & flow, recombining and survive even through horrible upheavals and massive changes.

We're likely moving back to a multifocal world like before colonialism wherein different smaller geographic areas (think a continents are even smaller part of a continent) had a country within that they tended to see as the leader of their particular area. But MAGA+DOGE killed whatever goodwill we had left by killing USAID, etc. Most countries have been increasingly upset about us being 'world police' and these shenanigans are the final straw. I don't think that the portion of billionaires, techies and fundamentalists who want to break up the USA into microstates will entirely get their way, but over time we'll lose our empire status entirely but still be around like Spain or the UK with a much smaller influence on the world stage.

In our favor is him being the most wishy-washy dictator in history. As long as we push Dems & non-interventionist Republicans into agreeing on this one thing by calling or emailing we can avoid this useless war. Anyways harass your Senator. ๐Ÿ––๐Ÿผ

I get the vibes his idea of the anthropological leans towards non-interventionist Margaret Mead-ism and ... well, neuroscience & archeological analysis of societal collapse has pushed us and other related fields in a more balanced direction. ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ If he said to an STS person "I just make the thing" they'd likely give you the what for ๐Ÿ˜†

Also when you invent something part of your personal responsibility should be giving recommended guidance on best practices on its use. Should a company enforce that? That is a larger more complicated debate that involves a lot of social conditions and I'd argue depends greatly on each culture (some cultures are more libertarian and some are more communal oriented) though personally leaning libertarian I lean towards non-enforcement or in the case of more communal societies that the government - not companies - wearing that role. OTOH no guidance or thoughts or cares for how others use or misuse it at all ... that's a suicidal level of independence. One should care about one's customers beyond profit. Thinking about it and giving safety recommendations is due diligence. Plus can prevent being sued.

As an educator parameters are good for kids. It's actually good to have a bit of 'nanny state' (based on ages & stages) for those whose brains aren't fully developed yet so that by the time they get older they're responsible enough not to abuse the full, uncensored version of a thing. It's actually part of how you teach personal responsibility ... gradiently.

honest personal take (disclaimer: i'm not an ML expert, i just study and use a lot of social apps): i think its highly unimaginative and tired to tell new users on a social platform to "reply a lot" in order to get any engagement. social platforms, for a long time, pinned discovery as a user problem. tiktok changed that. they didn't expect users to earn attention the hard way (hustling to self-promote and get follows). instead tiktok took on discovery as a platform problem and decoupled distribution from follower count entirely: a content-first, graph-agnostic approach. on tiktok, a user's responsibility is to make good content and the algo would do the rest based micro interactions and watch behavior. YouTube took a similar approach, but favored creators who mastered their (effort intensive) rules: SEO knowledge, thumbnails, content cadence, etc. if we're hearing that discovery is a problem, the question should be: whose problem โ€” the user's or the platform's? take long-form text platform substack: the recommender engine places more of the burden on the platform than the user, and the platform bias is towards quality via a trust graph. it recommends newsletters based on what you read, introduces editorial curation, and the "recommended by other writers" feature means that small / new writers can get regularly recommended to audiences that a specific writer's taste. each platform makes a design choice about who should work to be seen. on substack, they believe that good writers should be lifted through network effects and curation. does this scale easily? no, it scales slowly but is compounding. so why is this so hard for short-form text-based platforms like twitter, threads, bluesky, or farcaster? because short-form text is typically low-signal, high-noise. short posts on their own carry very little context or signal. it's easier to produce, but harder to evaluate. as a result, discovery for short-form text platform has relied heavily on follower graphs. twitter initially solved this with hashtags (then failed to do it at scale with lists, fleets, and circle). substack partially solved this with its writer graph (trust graph) and categories (topic / semantic clustering). and i think farcaster's open data, mini apps, and interoperability (zkTLS) can be leveraged for creative solutions here that aren't possible on other platforms. that excites me.
