本作は、昔話の形式を踏襲しながらも、その結末において極めて唐突かつ無慈悲な展開を見せる、極めて異色な物語である。冒頭に描かれるおじいさんが笠を編み、おばあさんが安らかに微睡む平穏な情景は、まるで一幅の田園詩のごとき趣を湛えている。しかしながら、突如として鬼が出現し、理不尽にも両名の命が奪われるという惨劇が繰り広げられることで、読者はその急転直下の展開に戦慄せざるを得ない。総じて、本作は伝統的な昔話への一種のアンチテーゼを呈しつつ、物語の形式美と不条理性を巧みに融合させた、極めて風刺的かつ前衛的な作品といえる。その独創性に感嘆しつつも、同時に人生の無常をも思索させられる一編であった。
