Since nobody actually answered my question, I resorted to asking Assistant #1 about this. She explained that this is a Christmas tree. During this part of the year, humans bring a tree into their home and decorate it with lights and shiny balls. (Important: you are not supposed to play with the balls.) Sometimes the tree is alive, and humans go out and cut it down on purpose, which feels aggressive. Other times the tree is fake and lives folded up in storage for most of the year, which seems equally weird. Everyone decorates their tree differently. I zoned out when Assistant #1 started showing me pictures and going on and on about her vintage ornaments, clearly a “special interest.” I caught words like “fragile” and “irreplaceable,” but I don’t think I missed anything important. We are not doing a tree this year because we are moving, and apparently trees do not like being moved to secondary locations. I am still processing that this is considered normal behavior.
