What didn’t work in the Bitcoin whitepaper? Mistakes and oversights from Satoshi Nakamoto, 15 years later ⬇ 1/ 📄 In 2008, Satoshi Nakamoto published the Bitcoin whitepaper, promising a decentralized financial system without intermediaries. But in 2025, reality shows that not everything went as planned. 2/ ⚙️ Scalability The whitepaper barely addressed scalability. Today, the network handles about 7 transactions per second — far too few for global use. During peak times, fees skyrocket and confirmations take a long time. 3/ 🖥️ Mining decentralization Satoshi envisioned a “one CPU, one vote” system. But with the rise of ASICs and mining pools, most of the hash power is now concentrated in the hands of a few players. 4/ ⚡ Energy consumption Bitcoin consumes as much energy as entire countries like the Netherlands. This raises environmental concerns and fuels public criticism.

And my personal focuses for 2025: 1. Ethereum, particularly: (i) L1 long-term roadmap (eg. single-slot finality, long-term VM, statelessness, security / resilience / decentralization) (ii) full-stack security, open source and privacy: ensuring Ethereum is usable in a way that is highly secure, free of centralized intermediaries and privacy-friendly, incl higher up the stack (apps, wallets...) 2. Big-picture d/acc (see https://vitalik.eth.limo/general/2025/01/05/dacc2.html ): * comms tools, info and social layer, mechanism design eg. governance, pubgoods/open source funding * cryptography, OS, hardware, physical infra, bio defense Meanwhile areas that are important but where I am relatively less involved (and others excel): * @gakonst @ansgar.eth @dankrad and others are taking on practicals of short-term scaling (eg. 10x the L1 gaslimit within 2026) * p2p, block construction, other research areas * @hww @tkstanczak are leading many EF matters * proven app layer categories (eg. defi, payments/savings)

For 2025 we need Fusaka on L1 with PeerDAS, ideally with 48/72 blob target/limit Let's aim to get a Fusaka testnet with these blob parameters running the day after Pectra goes live.

Aya first shared the idea of transitioning from ED of @ethereumfndn to President a year ago. She has accomplished much in her seven years as executive director of the EF. As I see it, the role of an ED is to create an environment where others can shine and do their best work, and so every success of the EF - the steady execution of Ethereum hard forks, client interop workshops, Devcon, Ethereum's culture and steadfast commitment to its mission and values, and more - is in part a result of Aya's stewardship. @AyaMiyagotchi will continue supporting the EF in many of the same ways in her new role. Meanwhile, we have been working on the new EF leadership structure, and will share more news soon. Stay tuned! https://blog.ethereum.org/2025/02/25/aya-announcement
